Calling all friends and owners of Woodstock Soasptone Company Stoves!

In February, Woodstock Soapstone's Union Hybrid Woodstove design was chosen as a finalist in the international Wood Stove Design Challenge. The challenge, put forth by the Alliance for Green Heat, was to develop and build an affordable, cleaner-burning wood stove for residential heating.

As part of the Wood Stove Design Challenge, Popular Mechanics Magazine is running a People's Choice Award for the design finalists and voting is taking place on the Popular Mechanics website.

Commonwealth Wood Stove Change-Out

The Massachusetts Clean Energy Center is coordinating a program aimed at replacing older, inefficient, and polluting wood stoves with modern EPA certified wood stoves that offer much greater efficiency and are far cleaner burning. Woodstock Soapstone Co. firmly believes that the future of wood burning relies heavily on reducing harmful emissions and increasing wood stove efficiency. We will be participating in this program as a retailer to promote these goals.

As a retailer Woodstock Soapstone Co. will be responsible for claiming a customer’s voucher as well as submitting the rebate application. The Program has very specific requirements regarding stove qualification and voucher redemption. Massachusetts residents who wish to purchase one of our stoves and use their voucher must be aware of our protocol regarding the change out program. Eligible customers must provide the following documentation and items:

  • A valid Program voucher
  • A picture of the stove being replaced to prove that is eligible as a pre-EPA model
  • A picture of the current installation of the pre-EPA stove
  • A copy of the building permit for the new stove installation
Due to the complexity of the program, we encourage all voucher recipients interested in one of our beautiful, high efficiency wood stoves, to call us toll free at 1-800-866-4344 to review the steps.

After we have confirmed the above items we can claim the customer’s voucher. Project completion documentation must then be provided by the customer in order for us submit the rebate application for reimbursement of the voucher. Project completion documentation consists of:

  • A picture of the new stove installed
  • A signed copy of the building permit, signed by the local building inspector, to ensure that the installation meets all applicable codes and has been completed safely
  • Pre EPA stove that has been replaced must be returned to us for proper disposal
After the project completion documentation has been confirmed, Woodstock Soapstone Co. will submit the rebate application. Once the application has been approved and Woodstock Soapstone has received the funds for the voucher, the customer will receive a check for the voucher value from Woodstock Soapstone Co.

We have developed this protocol to help our customers take advantage of this program. As a factory direct retailer, we must rely on our customers to provide accurate information and documentation in a timely manner to meet the April 15, 2013 deadline.

Detailed information on the Commonwealth Wood Stove Change-Out Program can be found at www.masscec.com/woodstove. Questions regarding Woodstock Soapstone Co. participation in the Program should be directed to (800) 866-4344 or info@woodstove.com

Wood Stove Design Challenge Finalist

The Alliance for Green Heat has listed the finalists for the Wood Stove Design Challenge, an international competition to build an affordable, cleaner-burning wood stove for residential heating.

Our Union Hybrid, has been chosen among the 14 finalists for this contest. The testing and judging will take place in November of 2013 on the National Mall in Washington, D.C.

UNION HYBRID PROTOTYPE IN THE LAB
The Alliance for Green Heat press release stated:
"The Union Hybrid stove is designed to be clean, efficient, affordable, and fun to use. The Union Hybrid stove is an advanced performance hybrid: it employs secondary combustion and a catalytic combustor, along with a self-regulating air/fuel ratio for maximum output and efficiency. The Union Hybrid stove is also a materials hybrid, using steel, cast iron, and soapstone to build durability and thermal mass into an affordable final product. The styling of the Union Hybrid stove pays homage to American Industry and Manufacturing by incorporating an industrial design aesthetic."

The Union Hybrid will have a firebox of approximately 3.3 cubic ft., and burn cleanly at a wide variety of outputs. The Union Hybrid will be front loading only. More details will be provided in the coming months.

Coming Soon...More High Efficiency Stove Magic!

We are working on another new high-efficiency stove (and a few “accessories”),  which should be ready to preview before the end of the year.  We’re postponing our Annual Fall Open House/Pig Roast till late November or December so that owners who come for the festivities can get a good look at what we’re working on and let us know what they think.

Our new stove will be entered in the Wood Stove Design Challenge, sponsored by Popular Mechanics /Alliance for Green Heat.  The showdown and judging takes place in November 2013, and we expect to have this stove approved and available at that time.

The new stove will be considerably different from our existing models, so the delayed Open House/Pig Roast promises to be a very interesting event!  Stay tuned for more information over the next few months!
